ARABIC AFTERNOON IN ALJEZUR Classified as National Monument, the Ribat of Arrifana is today one of the most important cases in Iberian and European archeology. To date it is the only Ribat known in Portugal and only the second throughout the Iberian Peninsula. It is a convent-fortress devoted to praying and coast guarding, consisting of various structures which include a necropolis, with a succession of mosques with chapels (qiblas and respective mihrabs) where the warrior monks performed their prayers. It further includes several smaller buildings destined to accommodation of the monks as well as the pilgrims and also vestiges of a minaret. This important monument is located at Ponta da Atalaia, approx. 1 km to the North of Arrifana beach. It will have been raised around 1130 by the master Sufi and Madi, Ibn Qasi, one of the principal figures in the political and religious world of the contemporary al-Andalus of D. Afonso Henriques with whom he established a pact against the governor of Silves, Ibn Wazir and the Almoadas, enabling the king of Portugal to conquer territories between Mondego and Tagus. […] In 1151 upon assassination of its founder in Silves by the followers of Ibn Almúndir, who then became the city’s governor, the Ribat of Arrifana was abandoned.
