Great year for Portuguese film

Portuguese cinemas saw a 20% surge in audience figures and revenues over the course of 2015, with 2.5 million more filmgoers generating €12.1 million more in turnover, the ICA - Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual told Lusa

There was a total of 355 full length feature films released last year with American films hoovering up 70.3% of the total audience with European films seen by 19.9% and Minions proving the year’s single most popular film, attracting an audience of 937,383 and generating ticket sales of €4.7 million.

In turn, Portuguese films attracted a total audience of 940,063 in 2015, registering the highest rate since 1975 with this 6.5% market share broadly accounted for by two Leonel Vieira films, "O pátio das cantigas" and "O leão da Estrela", drawing in a total audience of 785,000 spectators.

NOS Lusomundo Cinemas continue out in front in terms of market share and accounting for 62.3% of gross ticket sales.
