China wants to expand presence at Azores

The Chinese reportedly are in negotiations to expand China’s investments and its overall presence at the Azores

According to a September 20, 2016 letter sent by Rep. Devin Nunes, chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, to Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter, several high-ranking Chinese officials have visited the Azores in recent years,  culminating in a visit by Chinese Premier Li Keqiang.

“The Chinese delegation is reportedly in negotiations to expand China’s investments and its overall presence on the islands, including in the shipping port on Terceira, and they have also expressed interest in using the runway at Lajes Field,” the letter said.

For the past 70 years, Lajes Air Base has been one of seven main operating military bases under US Air Forces in Europe providing refueling and other support to US military, NATO aircraft and crew members transiting over the Atlantic.
